The Cookie Crumbles

Conde Nast, a magazine company that always brings to mind "family friendly," has killed off Cookie magazine, along with Gourmet — one of those magazines full of recipes you'd read but would never attempt — along with a couple of bridal magazines that likely weighed two pounds each per issue.

I'd always wanted to subscribe to Cookie, but I never got around to it, and I probably would have been disappointed if there weren't enough actual cookie coverage in it. But it seemed like a somewhat fun, down-to-earth magazine for parents looking for an alternative to Parents and Parenting. (This is a completely uninformed assumption based solely on the font used for the title, however.)

So I decided to check out Cookie's (still live) website to see what I've been missing.

There's a "style and beauty" section with an slideshow of warm-weather clothes for Mom, which includes bags costing as much as $425, a $445 "cardi," and a bunch of boots ranging in price from $169 to $385. Because you'll need to spend up to $1,255 before you're ready to "feel cozy and cool, whether you're picking apples with the kids or sipping mulled cider with friends."

You'll also find a travel section. Cookie's suggestions include those great-for-a-family-on-a-budget destinations like Stowe, Vail, Beaver Creek, and Lake Tahoe.

It's sad, really, because without Cookie, where will the average parent read a review of a $675 ($875 with infant car seat) stroller, or where to buy that $600 round rug for Jackson's room or that $1,290 desk and $305 table lamp for Sasha's?

But hey, maybe I'll whip up a batch of pumpkin bundt cakes, even though I know my kids would rather have Costco cupcakes.
